-
As networked communications evolve over the next decade, so to will the opportunities for cyber criminals to profit from the new technologies’ vulnerabilities.
-
Over 60 million North Americans have access to online banking, making them a rich target to cyber criminals.
-
85% of malicious software is written purely for profit.
-
Nearly nine out of 10 U.S. businesses suffered from a computer virus, spyware or other online attack in 2004 or 2005 despite widespread use of security software.
The Two Golden Rules of Security
1. Develop a game plan: A security strategy must be established at the enterprise level. Senior management must determine how they will protect the most important systems with a balanced approach. Organizations must expect to be hit and prepare to survive. Security is a combination of people, process and technology. Layered security is essential when attempting to harden the target.
2. A Culture of security must be established within an organization. An updated Information Security Policy becomes your Magna Carta. This document should become part of the very fiber of the organization. The policy will assist in building information security into the infrastructure and job descriptions of personnel. Security professionals should train and educate/update business unit managers frequently as operational risk has metastasized due to back end operations becoming digital. A balanced approach will ensure due diligence.
The electronic world has reached a point of inflection. Data is now being stolen as commonly and as completely as it is aggregated. Your data is your company. Failing to have a complete, living and active data-custody program is congruous to banks keeping depositors' cash without vaults, security cameras and vigilant guards on duty. Data must have the digital and human equivalent. If a company does not treat data like cash it will be stolen from storage or while in transit. Data-thieves are targeting servers, remote users, transmission, hosting companies, redundant data repositories and shippers. If your firm is exposed, you must have an updated and dynamic Information Security Policy.
